Lake Placid, NY
Fall is an exceptional time to hike in the High Peaks: the temperatures are favorable and the foliage is on full display. Our 11-mile traverse will provide ample opportunities to take in the scenery as we summit both Rocky Ridge Peak and Giant Mountain. Perhaps the best hiking route of the entire High Peaks area, we will begin our climb at the Route 9N trailhead, hike through the Blueberry Cobbles route and over the sweet summit of Bald Mountain with views of the backside of Giant Mountain and its rugged granite slides. Along the 6-mile trek to Rocky Ridge Peak, you will be blown away by the magnificent views over the Champlain Valley at Vermont’s Green Mountains. No wonder, as Rocky Ridge Peak stands at 4,420 feet and offers 360-degree views of the surrounding beauty of the Adirondacks. We will stop for pictures during the ascent and have lunch at the rocky summit before we set out for Giant Mountain.
From Rocky Ridge Peak, Giant Mountain is a mere 600 feet down to a small col and 800 feet up. Along the ascent, we will take a short side herd path leading to one of the massive granite slides seen from Rocky Ridge. The walk to Giant from here will reward us with a front row seat and the most photogenic views of the entire High Peaks: the Dix Range, Algonquin, Whiteface, and many more. We will descend via the Roaring Brook trail and visit its majestic waterfall. This is the best hike in the High Peaks!
Get off the couch, climb some mountains, and get inspired. Whether you are new to hiking or a seasoned 46er, this is going to be a great time. We will move at a pace that everyone can manage. Hikers will park at the Roaring Brook Falls trailhead on Route 73 and be shuttled to the trailhead on Route 9N. Our excursion will end with a sampling of beers from some of the local Lake Placid breweries. This is an experience not to be missed!
